Chair Caning and Seatweaving Experts

East Street Arts is dedicated to fostering the creation of art through artisan training programs, workshops, and community interactions for persons of all abilities.

In our chair caning studio, Association of Artisans to Cane, we provide hands-on learning to artists of all abilities in the craft of seat weaving.

The artists use these skills to restore chairs for community members with oversight from highly trained staff. Each artist has the opportunity to learn various forms of seat weaving, including hand cane, pressed cane, paper rush, and flat reed/splint weaving, as well as other techniques.

The artists advance at their own pace; as one style of seat weaving is mastered, another style is taught. While most of the seat weaving is done to restore chairs for community members, donated chairs in good condition are also restored and sold in the shop.

JC Caning specializes in hand cane, pressed cane, flat reed, round reed, splint, fiber and natural rush, seagrass, Danish cord, and shaker tape.

Services include cleaning and refreshing the finish, minor repairs, and sealing of finished weave if required. Staining to match is extra.

Approximate estimates can be given from a photo but are subject to change as each project is unique and may provide certain challenges.

Welcome to Seats on the Beach. We are a small family chair caning and seat weaving business, providing chair caning and other seat weaving services primarily in Charleston, South Carolina, and other regional sea island areas.

We work with most weaving media, rattan strand hand caning, press cane mesh, fibre rush, pre-twisted natural rush (which is a good substitute for cattail rush and bulrush), Danish cord, Kevlar cord, and twisted seagrass.

We provide basic chair repair services of replacing broken rails and rungs and tightening loose joints. We also provide minor touch-up staining and refinishing but we are not skilled in full refinishing.

We do not do upholstery and wicker but will occasionally rewrap wicker joints on a chair-by-chair basis.

Bayberry Seatweaving is now located in Bellevue, Nebraska, just south of Omaha, after recently moving from Canton, Massachusetts. Owner, Ted Powell had his chair caning and seatweaving business in Canton for 15 years, providing chair caning and other seatweaving services in the surrounding area.

My mother was the Extension Service agent for Dukes County on Martha’s Vineyard – great place to grow up on!!  She taught me how to refinish, cane, and rush furniture back in the sixties when I was about ten years old.

In Canton, I concentrated on single-strand caning, pressed cane, paper rush, pre-twisted natural rush, and Danish cord.  I intend to keep doing these same skills and incorporating other seat weaving types as the need arises.

In addition, I provide minor restoration, re-gluing, and refinishing.  My turn-around times vary depending on what is needed and the complexity of the work.  However, because I am “retired,” I can respond quickly.

Den of Antiquity specializes in hand, French and insert cane, all types of antique and modern wicker, natural and fiber rush, splint seats, Danish cord, bamboo, rattan, and outdoor plastic patio furniture restoration.

Owner Sandra Rosar, has been weaving for over 45 years and worked at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, VA and has restored pieces for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. There is not much that she hasn’t seen or done in the world of weaving with her numerous years of experience.

Sandra receives projects from many areas of the country that require imagination, creativity, engineering, and fine, detailed restoration to skillfully bring the piece back to its original condition. She maintains a shop with a master woodworker who assists with projects if needed and has just as many years of experience in refinishing, gluing, repairing, and restoration as Sandra.

The Crooked Rim Chair Caning & Seat Weaving, located in Massillon, Ohio, is a home-based business owned and operated by the husband and wife team, Jeff and Robbin Huss.

Robbin has been weaving baskets and chair seats for over 30 years and Jeff has been weaving for over 15 years.

The Crooked Rim offers traditional 7-step hand cane, fancy cane patterns, pressed cane, woven patterns, natural and fiber rush, seagrass, splint, reed, and Shaker tape.

Saggy Bottom Girls Caning has moved location! In August 2022 we moved our residence and business from Greenwood, Indiana to Salem, Alabama! We are now offering our chair seat weaving services in and around the Salem, AL area, which is 1 1/2 hours south of Atlanta between Columbus, GA and Auburn, AL. 

We specialize in cane, fiber rush, seagrass, flat reed, binding cane, and others.  We are a home-based family business and I personally weave each chair.  We also work with local restoration companies should your chair need structural repairs.

I started this business several years ago as a way to spend time with my dad.  People began asking me to fix their chairs with saggy bottoms and that is how the business began.

This is also how I came up with the name. It’s a play on the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” starring George Clooney, and my Saggy Bottom Girls Caning seemed like an interesting twist to their Soggy Bottom Boys band.

RS Peck offers caning, both handwoven and prewoven, in most patterns including the very difficult double-blind cane technique. I also do woodcarving of reproductions (such as missing sections on furniture and mirror frames) and original pieces.

Carrie Weiss, owner of Black Swamp Seat Weaving, LTD, was taught to weave by her grandmother at the early age of 15.

Her grandmother patiently taught her to take pride in her work, weave the best she possibly can, and to continually challenge herself.

After 45+ years, she continues to do this to this very day.

Over the years since Carrie first began weaving, she has expanded her abilities to include ALL forms of weaving, such as, hand cane, blind cane, cane webbing, rush, splint, and wicker.

She works on weaving projects for individuals, museums, refinishers, upholsterers, interior decorators, and many others.

Carrie also treats every project with the care and meticulous attention it deserves, while taking on some of the most difficult projects.
