Schuler Reed Furniture, owned by Morgan Schuler is dedicated to quality repairs on cane furniture. Located just ten miles from Brookville, Indiana, between Cincinnati, OH and Indianapolis, IN, provides seat weaving services to this broad area.
My idea to start caning came from my grandparents who had a shop in Cincinnati called Lewis Reed Furniture, and I want to continue that in my own way the best I can.
I am self-taught with the help of many people from around the world, and I intend to grow my business as large as I can in the coming years.
I specialize in hand cane, pressed cane, fiber rush, flat reed, and binder cane. I have done some light wickerwork and a couple other small repairs, and if I have not done a type of repair before I will typically try to figure it out so I can try to perfect it.
I have had to color-match wood repairs on chairs, and I am able to get those pretty close when necessary but have not taken on any large refinishing jobs. At this time, I am not looking to tackle that challenge.
Before repairing the seat, I always round the edges of the opening and the cane holes to prevent premature failure in the future. I then tighten any loose joints that I am able to, and then after the seat repair I oil the wood to bring it back to life. This is all included in one estimate to make things simple.
The easiest method of getting an estimate is to send pictures through text message to the phone number listed. That estimate is typically very accurate, but in-person estimates may differ a little depending on damage unseen in photos.
When possible, I offer pick-up and delivery within a reasonable distance from my shop.
Thank you, and I look forward to bringing a new life to your cane furniture.

Silver River Center for Chair Caning is operated by two chair nerds on a mission to cultivate and inspire a reverence for a worldwide chair caning legacy.
Our vision is to promote an enthusiasm for the craft through education, published work, restoration, and travel. Be on the lookout for our instructional manual to be published in 2023! Also, see our article in Mother Earth News (August/September 2021).
We aim to dispel the myth that chair caning is a dying art. We want to empower everyone to learn to restore their own chairs. So we expanded our chair caning restoration business into Silver River Center for Chair Caning, the nation’s only chair caning school and museum. We teach small classes at our shop in Asheville as well as regular classes at John C Campbell Folk School, Penland, Arrowmont, and the Island Farm.
Silver River is an official education center of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Memberships include The SeatWeavers’ Guild, The Furniture Society, The American Craft Council, The River Arts District Association, and we are a heritage member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild (Brandy is a 4th Generation Chair Weaver). We are proud to honor a family tradition, the craft, and all chair nerds (past, present, and future) with Silver River Center for Chair Caning.
Visitors to Silver River can–
- See daily demonstrations on an incredible variety of chairs with woven seats.
- Take classes from beginner to advanced tutorials, volunteer, or apply for apprenticeships.
- Take a self-guided tour d’ chairs and read about the material, history, and process of 8 styles of chair seat weaving. A permanent collection of historical chairs is on display as well as rotating exhibits including #canespotting and Historic Western North Carolina Chairs.
- Enjoy the reference library and educate yourself on ancient and global traditions.
- Bring their family heirloom in for restoration by our seat weaving experts
- Donate their chair for student practice
- Purchase restored chairs for sale
- Get advice on their chairs
- Quickly become total chair nerds.
NOTE: Due to the “Pandemic Pivot” as well as persistent overuse injuries, we are stepping away from MOST restorations. We still love to weave chairs, we just have to be more selective with what we bring in. Our main goal is education through classes, both in-person in our shop and at craft schools across the country, and online.
We shoot videos for YouTube and we are building an online school for on-demand learning from the comfort of your home. We travel to speak and demonstrate at museums, craft shows, schools, woodworkers associations, etc.
As such, our restoration waitlist is often 6 months-1 year out. Restoration inquiries should be emailed to [email protected] and should include photos of the chair attached to the email. Classes at the moment in 2022, are by appointment only, call or email to schedule.

Bayberry Seatweaving is now located in Bellevue, Nebraska, just south of Omaha, after recently moving from Canton, Massachusetts. Owner, Ted Powell had his chair caning and seatweaving business in Canton for 15 years, providing chair caning and other seatweaving services in the surrounding area.
My mother was the Extension Service agent for Dukes County on Martha’s Vineyard – great place to grow up on!! She taught me how to refinish, cane, and rush furniture back in the sixties when I was about ten years old.
In Canton, I concentrated on single strand caning, pressed cane, paper rush, pre-twisted natural rush, and Danish cord. I intend to keep doing these same skills and incorporating other seat weaving types as the need arises.
In addition, I provide minor restoration, re-gluing, and refinishing. My turn-around times vary depending on what is needed and the complexity of the work. However, because I am “retired,” I can respond quickly. I provide free cost estimates and can usually do them using a few pictures and some seat measurements.

Barbara’s Caning and Weaving, also known in the region as Broward Furniture Refinishing & Caning is located in Fort Lauderdale and has served Broward County and the surrounding area for over 25 years, reweaving chair seats.
Owner Barbara Marx, started weaving many years ago when she needed her own four chairs re-caned. She was living in New York City at the time, in the 1980s, and decided to learn the chair caning craft on her own.
Barbara liked caning so much that she later went into the seat weaving business, providing services of hole caning, pressed cane webbing, paper rush and repairs to wicker furniture, too.
Always up for a challenge, not only do we work on chair seats, but also love seats, benches, and even cabinet doors on yachts!
Our services also include repair and re-gluing of chairs. We do work for several local antique dealers in Florida and New York, too.

Saggy Bottom Girls Caning has moved location! In August 2022 we moved our residence and business from Greenwood, Indiana to Salem, Alabama! We are now offering our chair seat weaving services in and around the Salem, AL area, which is 1 1/2 hours south of Atlanta between Columbus, GA and Auburn, AL.
We specialize in cane, fiber rush, seagrass, flat reed, binding cane, and others. We are a home-based family business and I personally weave each chair. We also work with local restoration companies should your chair need structural repairs.
I started this business several years ago as a way to spend time with my dad. People began asking me to fix their chairs with saggy bottoms and that is how the business began.
This is also how I came up with the name. It’s a play on the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” starring George Clooney, and my Saggy Bottom Girls Caning seemed like an interesting twist to their Soggy Bottom Boys band.

Welcome to Brad’s Backcountry Woodshop in Big Bear Lake California. Located high in the mountains of southern California I create new wooden furniture pieces as well as refinish and restore the old. I will fix dings, dents, raised or missing veneer, broken and missing pieces, spindle turnings, reweaving your cane, rush and splint chair seats, polishing old finishes.
Fine instruments to chairs, simple to complex, French polishing, color matching, toner, glazing, grain filling, these are just a few processes I take each piece through. Each piece already has a story to tell and when I am done it will have many more to tell.
These are just some of the things I have had the honor of working on and bringing back its original beauty to last another 100 years. When working on old pieces of furniture I always wonder about the hands that have touched the piece prior to mine, the conversations that took place around a hundred-year-old dining room table or the music created by a 110-year-old reed organ that no one outside that room has heard today.
I started working with wood at a young age, as my Grandparents on both sides and father had all the necessary tools and knowledge about woodworking for me to become comfortable in working with wood. My Mom also as early as I can remember was bringing home antiques and of course, most of them needed repair.
Without knowing it at the time I was not only learning how to repair wood furniture but also was paying attention to the construction of older furniture, joinery and finish used. For long-lasting furniture, I realized proper joints, finish and proportion is essential to a great piece.
Please browse my site and see what you like! If you do not see what you are looking for in the site, just go to the contact page and tell me what you need! I am willing to work with you to create the wooden piece you have in mind or to fix whatever’s broken.
Just e-mail pictures to me so I can give you a ballpark estimate. I will pick up and deliver pieces close to Big Bear Lake, CA. If you happen to live outside California we can schedule or discuss pick up or delivery options.
Thanks for stopping by and let’s connect on social, too!
