TR Tolzmann, hand chair caner since 1972. I also refinished furniture in what I think is the traditional way.
Hand chair caning is work that makes me feel good. Why? It re-enlivens tradition—hand work—a craft. It makes something usable again—restores it, as it were.
It can use skill and dedication in the caning—the doing. The skill is a natural trait—good with my hands, it seems to be an inherent trait.
It seems the skill is essentially wanting to do it well.
I also offer lessons in whistling, singing, playing the French horn. As well as lessons and advice on refinishing, repairing, caning, upholstering, and furniture building.
Contact today for directions and let me know what services I can provide to help you on your project.

Bayberry Seatweaving is now located in Bellevue, Nebraska, just south of Omaha, after recently moving from Canton, Massachusetts. Owner, Ted Powell had his chair caning and seatweaving business in Canton for 15 years, providing chair caning and other seatweaving services in the surrounding area.
My mother was the Extension Service agent for Dukes County on Martha’s Vineyard – great place to grow up on!! She taught me how to refinish, cane, and rush furniture back in the sixties when I was about ten years old.
In Canton, I concentrated on single strand caning, pressed cane, paper rush, pre-twisted natural rush, and Danish cord. I intend to keep doing these same skills and incorporating other seat weaving types as the need arises.
In addition, I provide minor restoration, re-gluing, and refinishing. My turn-around times vary depending on what is needed and the complexity of the work. However, because I am “retired,” I can respond quickly. I provide free cost estimates and can usually do them using a few pictures and some seat measurements.

Den of Antiquity specializes in hand, French and insert cane, all types of antique and modern wicker, natural and fiber rush, splint seats, Danish cord, bamboo, rattan, and outdoor plastic patio furniture restoration.
Owner Sandra Rosar, has been weaving for over 45 years and worked at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, VA and has restored pieces for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. There is not much that she hasn’t seen or done in the world of weaving with her numerous years of experience.
Sandra receives projects from many areas of the country that require imagination, creativity, engineering, and fine, detailed restoration to skillfully bring the piece back to its original condition. She maintains a shop with a master woodworker who assists with projects if needed and has just as many years of experience in refinishing, gluing, repairing, and restoration as Sandra.
Den of Antiquity works on all types of furniture, from antique to modern, in homes, hotels, offices, restaurants, yachts, and will travel to your location when requested to do so. No job is too big or small, simple or complicated!
RS Peck offers caning, both handwoven and prewoven, in most patterns including the very difficult double-blind cane technique. I also do woodcarving of reproductions (such as missing sections on furniture and mirror frames) and original pieces.
I owned and operated a furniture restoration business in Racine, Wisconsin for 24 years, prior to closing in 2014. So if your piece needs gluing or repair, as is often required with chairs and rockers, I do provide that service.

Richard Saunders is a wicker furniture restoration specialist, author of five books on antique wicker furniture, and one of the only certified wicker furniture appraisers in the country.
Richard and his wife Paula, relocated from California to Savannah, Georgia several years ago. Richard has over 45 years of hands-on experience in repairing and restoring wicker furniture and writing about and appraising antique wicker furniture.
One of Richard’s books, Collecting and Restoring Wicker Furniture — was the first book published with a how-to chapter on wicker repair. Several other books explain the history of the wicker furniture industry, give general pricing estimates, illustrate the different types of wicker furniture, and show examples of manufacturing methods and company warehouses.
Thinking of selling or throwing out your old wicker furniture? STOP! Don’t throw out a potentially valuable and irreplaceable piece of our American wicker history.
Before you toss your wicker–get an appraisal from Richard, first! His appraisals include historical information, notes on style and design, dating the piece, and either proving the manufacturer or giving a likely manufacturer of the piece.
Richard provides certified, fee-based wicker furniture appraisals at $35 per piece. His appraisals can be used to establish the value of your wicker pieces for a variety of purposes:
- establish family heirloom/inheritance value
- estate resale value
- resale value
- insurance value
- moving damage claims
- and even court cases if necessary
Richard Saunders is one of only a few appraisers whose appraisal certification specialty is antique wicker furniture. Certified appraisals are given only after a physical inspection or through a series of good-quality photos sent to him via email or postal mail.
Contact Richard today for an appointment so you will be knowledgeable about your wicker furniture.
Mr. Saunders is also offering BRAND NEW copies of WICKER FURNITURE: A GUIDE TO RESTORING AND COLLECTING (Crown Publishers; 1990), which has been out-of-print for many years.
This is a 245-page, large-format paperback book which includes an 8-page color photo section, hundreds of black and white photos and lots of fascinating information on antique wicker furniture. A perfect addition to anyone’s personal or seatweaving business reference library.
This book went out of print several years ago but he has a limited supply of NEW copies which he purchased from the publisher’s warehouse. He would be happy to personally sign your copy, just ask. The price of this special book is $30.00, which includes shipping and handling.
Contact Richard today to order your signed book, WICKER FURNITURE: A GUIDE TO RESTORING AND COLLECTING or to get your wicker piece evaluated and appraised for its proper value, or to get your wicker piece repaired! Directions to his shop will be given when your appointment is booked.
