The Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia, Minnesota, presents a new exhibition by Angora, MN basketmaker Cathryn Peters, entitled Antler Baskets–Masculine Element, Feminine Form on March 13-April 13, 2008.

Cathryn is a 2004 Career Development Grant recipient as well as a 2005 Emerging Artist Fellowship recipient from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and the McKnight Foundation. This is the second major showing of her work on the Iron Range of northern Minnesota.
Opening reception, weaving demonstration, slide show, and refreshments will take place on Friday, March 14th at 5:30 pm.
Cathryn recently moved from Zumbro Falls, Minnesota, a small southern town not far from Rochester, to Angora, MN, near Cook, in 2002.
Peters has been repairing and restoring cane and wicker furniture since 1975. But for the last 11 years before the move, she and hubby, John, lived in the apartment above the wicker repair shop in a Century-old two-story storefront building on Main Street in Zumbro Falls.
In 1990, Cathryn decided to break out her creative artistic side when she designed and wove her first antler basket for her husband, John.
He supplied only one antler from the rack of a deer he took during the hunting season for Cathryn to experiment on. That first antler basket was titled, “First Attempt,” because it was, she said.
After that first antler basket was created, Cathryn began making many other one-of-a-kind functional, wall, and pedestal style antler basket sculptures.
For this exhibit, the first one of its kind on the Iron Range, there are 17 antler basket sculptures for you to enjoy.
