Ely Art Walk–Ely, MN Feb. 2-12, 2012

February 2nd, 2012 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

The Ely Art Walk that started on Thursday, February 2 and runs through the 12th promises to be a great winter festival art show! There are over 500 pieces of art on display, presented by 150 artists in the downtown business establishments.

Begun in 1998 the Ely Art Walk is different from just about any art walk you’ve ever been to before. For one thing, it takes place in the winter and for another, all the art can be viewed outside through the participating business windows, so you can visit anytime!

Here’s the video The Playlist made of last year’s Ely Art Walk Feb. 3-13, 2011–Enjoy!

My antler baskets (although my name is misspelled in the brochure and map), will be featured in the window of Kess Gallery at 130 E. Sheridan Street, Ely, MN. Should be listed as Cathryn Peters, not Catherine, but hey…what’s the diff’? I answer to just about anything!

The Ely Art Walk is a part of the bigger and older, Ely Winter Festival.

The Winter Festival began in 1995 and over the years, activites such as a crafts fair, the Ely Art Walk, musical concerts, dances, sled dog rides and several food events have become part of the festivities, besides the wonderful ice sculptures and snow carving contest that has been a constant.

There will also be a “meet and greet” the artists of the Ely Art Walk on Saturday, February 4th from 1-4 p.m. at the Chocolate Moose on Sheridan Street (the main drag through town).

So, put on your hat, gloves and winter coat to join us in Ely, Minnesota for all the fun and festivities for the Ely Winter Festival and Ely Art Walk.

Antler Basket Weaving Hints and Tips

November 8th, 2011 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

TUESDAY ANTLER BASKET WEAVING TIPS OF THE DAY–Keeping with the antler basket weaving theme I’ve been with for a few posts now, we are going to focus Tuesday’s Tips on Antler Basket Weaving, what else?

Asian Warrior Antler Wall Basket-Sculpture

Do you know how to tell the difference between a naturally shed antler and a harvested antler? First of all, do you know that deer are from the Cervidae family and are mammals that include several types of deer, caribou, elk, reindeer and moose? And the antlers they sport fall off in the spring and then new antlers grow in their place?

Farewell--Antler Magazine Basket

"Farewell" Antler Magazine Basket has a naturally shed red deer antler for the handle.

The antler basket picture below is an example of a  ”harvested” or cut off whitetail deer antler used as the handle in an antler basket. When the hunters take the deer to provide meat for their families, one of the by-products of the kill are the antlers from the bucks or male deer.

See the butt end of the antler near the bumpy rosette? That’s where it’s been cut off the head, leaving a smooth, flat cut surface. And of course, it’s against the law to shoot a deer out of season and to kill deer just for the antlers, but you knew that already, right?

“Harvested” or cut off antler used as handle in antler basket.

So, by closely examining the end of the antler at the base, you will now be able to tell whether it’s a “harvested deer antler” that’s been cut from the head, or the more difficult to find and more costly to buy, “naturally shed antler”.

Don’t be fooled when someone tries to tell you that the antler is naturally shed when the base has been cut and is smooth and flat. Because leaving the bumpy, nubby base is the best way you can be assured the antler has been collected or picked up from a deer or other member of the Cervidae family after its natural shed! And there are a lot of dishonest people out there that will try to convince you otherwise, just to make a buck (no pun on words intended).

Have you ever found your own antler sheds, and if so did you by any chance train your dog to find them for you? One of our black lab female puppies was pretty good at finding them for me and she wasn’t even trained!  How about you, what experiences have you had with finding shed anters?

It was a great event with a really good turnout of about 75 people on a beautiful, sunny evening, which encouraged everyone to be out and about and gallery hopping.

Furniture maker Peter Pestalozzi and I, with my antler basket sculptures, were paired up in the MacRostie Gallery with our show, “Nature Refined” and then photographer Gayle Streier was in the Minnesota Gallery with “Vernacular,” her black and white nature photographs.

Antler Basket Art Presentation at Ely Library

Peters with antler baskets

On March 2, 2011 at 6 p.m. I will be speaking about my craft of antler basketmaking at the Ely Minnesota Public Library as the first of a three part series at libraries across the Iron Range.

Peters antler basket wall pocket

In December of last year I was honored to be contacted by an Arrowhead Library System board member to see if I’d be interested in giving the presentations included as part of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Library Legacy and the Minnesota State Arts Board.

I love sharing my art with others so this lecture will be lots of fun to do. Weather is supposed to be fairly cold, but all of the folks living in Ely are well used to that!

The audience attending my presentation will get a close-up view of the baskets and short demonstration as to how the antler “speaks” to me, telling me what shape and design the basket is to be. I’ll also be bringing some baskets in various stages of completion so they can see what the weaving process encompasses.

So, if you are in the Ely, Minnesota area on Wednesday, March 2nd, please stop and say “Hello” at the Ely Public Library at 30 South First Avenue East or call (218)365-5140 for more information.

This project was funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s art and cultural heritage.

Minnesota Public Radio Membership Drive

February 20th, 2011 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Classical Music Station--Minnesota Public Radio My comment about listening to MPR as I work in my studio was read on Minnesota Public Radio’s membership drive last week when I decided to renew my sustaining membership online. Since there was a place for giving comments, I did just that.

“I need MPR classical music  playing each day in the background at work while I’m in my studio weaving antler baskets, chair caning and restoring antique wicker furniture, because it grounds and centers me, keeping me sane throughout the day.”

And wouldn’t you know the DJ, Mindy Radner, read my comment and talked quite a bit about my business! Talk about a good advertisement for The Wicker Woman®, thank you MPR!
