Wednesday Wicker Wisdom–Antique Wicker Repair Process

I thought you might enjoy seeing some photos of the antique wicker furniture repair process that goes on when giving these grand old pieces some TLC. Enjoy these “before” and “after” shots and some “during”!

Rarely did I take a picture after the piece was either stained or painted, for some odd reason. Guess I just wanted to highlight the restoration and wasn’t concerned with the final look, sorry.

Here are some antique wicker furniture pieces from the Victorian era during the process of my restoration…

Aren’t these antique wicker furniture pieces grand? I really love the Victorian era wicker furniture because of the romantic, soft, flowing lines and heavy embellishments of the curlicues, wooden beads and fancy cane woven backs. Don’t you?

What’s your story with wicker furniture? do you have some family heirlooms or pieces you’ve picked up at estate sales, yard sales or flea markets?

  1. I am in the process of redoing a wicker rocker very similar to the one you have pictured from 1910, but am a little stumped on how to tie off the braid in the middle section without it looking bad or coming undone is the some resource that would show me how to do it? The original was so badly broken I could not tell how it was done.

    1. Hello Anne,

I know how frustrating trying to figure out how to repair a wicker braid can be since I’ve done so many over the years. A really good resource is the book, How to Buy and Restore Wicker Furniture by Thomas Duncan. You can find this suggestion and several more on my Wicker FAQ page on my website. And here’s a link to it also

Happy Weaving! Hope all goes well.

Nice to hear you have a wicker doll buggy and want to take care of it! You can go to my Wicker FAQ page where you will find lots of helpful information and links to other relevant pages (how-to clean wicker, wicker furniture materials, how-to paint wicker, etc.) on my website which will also help you out! Hope this helps!
