Summer’s Winding Down Quickly

My oh my, what ever happened to the summer? My world seems to be spinning a bit to fast right now. Summer’s winding down quickly, isn’t it?

Here we are nearing fall with the kiddies going back to school, the leaves turning colors, embracing the cooler weather and the approaching hunting season.

After a week of temperatures in the high 80s and 90s, we are expecting temps only in the 70s today, what a relief! Found this bee in the wild rose patch by the driveway a couple weeks ago.

All six of my hummingbird feeders need to be refilled daily now, since there are so many birds here, I guess the little guys are getting ready for their long migration.

I love sitting out here on my new deck that my son-in-law Joe built for me in the back yard. I sit there in the mornings with my cup of java watching the hummingbirds and I guess they like sitting here too!

If you are curious about these birdies like I am, take a look at Hummingbirds.net for some fascinating statistics and information.

A few weeks ago while mowing the lawn, it was taking me forever to do it. I was stopping to let the multitude of frogs jump out of the way and didn’t want to run over the bees on the clover flowers either!

Lots coming up this fall and lots for me to write about that took place over the last couple months, too. Just haven’t had time to post. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming days.

  1. I’m really glad there are frogs where you live. I used to live near the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and when I was a youngster there were a lot of frogs there. But in later years there weren’t. I’m glad you are considerate of life. Beautiful post!

    1. Oh yes Tim, there are lots of frogs up here in northern Minnesota. In fact, in the spring they make so much noise with their croaking at night you can hardly hear yourself think. I have several audio tapes of it and should really post them to my Youtube channel so everyone can hear, it’s really soothing, almost like “white noise.”

  2. I love love love those red chairs and the purple table!! I want that same deck!! Now I would get up early in the morning to sit out there!! LOL

    1. Thanks Lynne, the table color actually matches the two chairs and are a deep, dark red almost a burgundy. The chairs are bouncy with big springs, so it’s almost like you are sitting in a rocking chair. Love sitting out there on the deck in the mornings and in the evenings enjoying the Universe and all its splendor!

  3. Great pictures, Cathryn! I need to attract more hummingbirds. The ones we get are tiny – not much bigger than a large bumble bee. Speaking of which, I was just happily noticing today that we’ve had a lot more bumble bees this summer than wasps. I think it’s partly due to the increase in berry plantings – I’m just happy to have fewer wasps. The bees go about their business in the berries while I go about mine with no trouble in between.

    1. Thanks for the compliment on the pictures Christy. We have a ton of the regular little bees around all over the place just within the last week or so during the end of August. They weren’t bad at all before, but now they are horrible. These aren’t the nice little honey bees either, they are the pesky stinging small ones that are very annoying.

Someone mentioned that they thought it was because it’s been so dry lately. And the flowers are on their last legs without producing much nectar for those bees, so they are searching all over for something good to eat elsewhere. Maybe that person was right?

Nice to hear your berries are coming along so nicely! They will be really well established by next year.

  4. Still wondering if I’d get more humming birds with more feeders. Or maybe you have more because you aren’t as surrounded by woods.

    1. You might get more hummingbirds with more feeders, I added a couple and did have lots more birds this year than ever before. Also added hummingbird attracting flowers beneath the feeders, maybe that helped also.

Our trees are farther away from the house than yours are Lois, but I wouldn’t think that would be of any benefit. Maybe it’s the type or color of your feeders? Are they primarily red and not some other color, because these birds are absolutely attracted to the red.

But don’t colored dye in the syrup solution, that’s not good for the birds, just use regular sugar and water in the syrup solution 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water, boil the water to take care of any bad stuff in the water, let it cool completely and then fill the feeders.

The hummingbirds find you regardless of where they are hung, if the feeders are kept clean and full and are put up early in the Spring and taken down when none come any more in the Fall.
