Is it spring yet where you live?

Is it Spring yet where you live? Here we are in the first week of March and evidentially it’s “coming in like a lion” if today’s temperature is any indication of what’s to come up here in Angora, Minnesota.

Oh my goodness, it’s no wonder it was cold in the house last night, we have -20° F this morning outside! The first thing I did after making a cup of joe, was to fire up the woodstove–forget going outside for a morning walk, I’ll start that maybe next month.

One nice thing that occurs when it’s so cold, are lovely sunrises to watch as they assent, guess that’s one consolation. So is seeing all the wildlife in action, owls, eagles, chickadees and other small birds, deer, weasels and even the skunks are fun to watch–from a distance of course!

Yesterday as I was working on the computer, getting proposals for classes together, I saw what I think was a great horned owl.

It flew by the window and then landed on one of the treetops. My little camera didn’t do a very good job of capturing the little fellow, but here’s the shot anyway.

The owl searched around for a while and didn’t see anything interesting I guess, and then went for another treetop and searched again. After about four landings on the spruce and tamarack trees, the owl flew off. Sure was fun watching something so magnificent in flight and on the prowl.

  1. The lawn’s been mowed, which is no surprise here in Florida, but my bees have been sending out swarms since early February. That’s a surer sign of spring than Punxsutawney Phil!

    1. The owl was really beautiful as it flew passed my window, with its wings widespread. Wish I had been able to get a picture of him then before he went up into the tree. It was really close when going by the window, probably only 50 feet away!

  2. I’ve looked at your site and blog before, but finally thought I’d better add it to my Google Reader. Now I can see you if I want to email you! Wow, that’s one big owl. I haven’t seen any owls this year, but one year when there was what is called an Eruption, we had an owl in front of the house for several days. And I have a crochet owl I made a long time ago. In another life, maybe. I also just reread your Dec posting on your website. sigh. Hugs. Plus a question: if you always called him Pete, why did you always refer to him as John when you talked to me?

    1. We were living here during that Eruption of the owls, wasn’t that about three or four years ago? I’ve never seen so many owls in my life, too many to count when I drove into Cook they were all over the place!

My husband’s friends, kids he grew up with, and family members always called him by his given name, John. And it was only me, my family and our close friends that knew us in Germany, that called him, “Pete.”

You guys know him from up here and Lake City where everyone called him, John. He was “Pete” to me and I was always “Tootsie” to him.

  3. Hope you’ll do more basket classes in Cook soon. We had a wolf chase a deer thru our property last week…deer was faster….Ellen

    1. I’m trying to see when we can do more basketry classes in Cook at the Northwoods Friends of the Arts (NWFA) right now and will be announcing it on my blog. So, if you subscribe to the blog, you’ll be the first to know, Ellen. Have any type of basket you’d especially like to make?

Was that wolf a big one that was chasing the deer on your property? I’ve seen them here too, but they were quite a ways away, so couldn’t be sure on the size. I’ve also made a couple videos (audios really) of the wolves howling and put them on my Youtube channel. Have you listened?

  4. I am soooo ready for Spring, but we have had some snow here today. I live in a small town west of Indy. We trusted Punxsutawney Phil, but it seems he has lost his touch.

    1. Hi Claudia,

I’m with you and have cabin fever, can’t wait for Spring either. I wonder how many times that ground hog has been right? Guess I should do an Internet search to find out. Hang in there, hopefully we’ll be out working in the gardens and flowerbeds soon.
