Welcome to Brad’s Backcountry Woodshop in Big Bear Lake California. Located high in the mountains of southern California I create new wooden furniture pieces as well as refinish and restore the old. I will fix dings, dents, raised or missing veneer, broken and missing pieces, spindle turnings, reweaving your cane, rush and splint chair seats, polishing old finishes.

Fine instruments to chairs, simple to complex, French polishing, color matching, toner, glazing, grain filling, these are just a few processes I take each piece through. Each piece already has a story to tell and when I am done it will have many more to tell.

These are just some of the things I have had the honor of working on and bringing back its original beauty to last another 100 years. When working on old pieces of furniture, I always wonder about the hands that have touched the piece prior to mine, the conversations that took place around a hundred-year-old dining room table or the music created by a 110-year-old reed organ that no one outside that room has heard today.

I started working with wood at a young age, as my Grandparents on both sides and father had all the necessary tools and knowledge about woodworking for me to become comfortable in working with wood. My Mom also as early as I can remember was bringing home antiques and of course, most of them needed repair.

Without knowing it at the time I was not only learning how to repair wood furniture but also was paying attention to the construction of older furniture, joinery and finish used. For long-lasting furniture, I realized proper joints, finish and proportion is essential to a great piece.

Tim is located in Western Montana and has been weaving chairs for 30 years. He works with hole cane, pressed cane, splint, wide binder cane, fibre rush, pre-twisted rush, Shaker Tape, and Danish cord.

He is also experienced with unusual weaves like Spider Weave, French Blind Cane, and cane-suspended medallions.

If your chair needs a little TLC, including making new parts if they are needed, Tim can handle that for you.

Tim can usually provide you with a general idea of the cost of your repair if you text or email clear photos to him.

Of course, the final quote is always dependent on a physical inspection of the item.

Lost Arts Chair Caning, located in Lisbon, New Hampshire, performs expert restoration of chair seats: hand caning in standard and fancy patterns, pressed web caning, porch rockers, binder cane, pierced fiberboard chair seats, embossed leather seats, splint weaving in a variety of patterns, hickory bark seats, Shaker tape, and wicker repair.

A price estimate will be given after physical evaluation. Structural repairs are available if needed, and will be included in the estimate of work to be done. We provide free pickup and delivery in a 10-mile radius.

After completion of repairs, all chairs are given a courtesy cleaning, waxing and minor joint tightening before returning to the happy client.

The Crooked Rim Chair Caning & Seat Weaving, located in Massillon, Ohio, is a home-based business owned and operated by the husband and wife team, Jeff and Robbin Huss.

Robbin has been weaving baskets and chair seats for over 30 years and Jeff has been weaving for over 15 years.

The Crooked Rim offers traditional 7-step hand cane, fancy cane patterns, pressed cane, woven patterns, natural and fiber rush, seagrass, splint, reed, and Shaker tape.

Schuler Reed Furniture, owned by Morgan Schuler is dedicated to quality repairs on cane furniture. Serving both Indiana and Ohio since we are located just ten miles from Brookville, IN, between Cincinnati, OH and Indianapolis, IN.

My idea to start caning came from my grandparents who had a shop in Cincinnati called Lewis Reed Furniture, and I want to continue that in my own way the best I can.

Self-taught with the help of many people from around the world, I intend to grow my business as large as I can in the coming years.

I specialize in:

• hand cane
• pressed cane
• fiber rush
• flat reed
• binder cane
• light wickerwork

I also do small repairs and if I have not done a particular type of repair before, I will typically try to figure it out so I can perfect it.

Color-matching wood repairs on chairs is also a service I can provide, and I am able to get those pretty close but have not taken on any large refinishing jobs. At this time, I am not looking to tackle that challenge.

Before reweaving the seat, I always round the edges of the opening and the cane holes to prevent premature failure in the future. I then tighten any loose joints that I am able to, and then after the seat repair I oil the wood to bring it back to life. This is all included in one estimate to make things simple.

The easiest method of getting an estimate is to send pictures through text message to the phone number listed. That estimate is typically very accurate, but in-person estimates may differ a little depending on damage unseen in photos.

If needed, I also offer a fee-based pick-up and delivery service, within a reasonable distance from my shop.

Owner, Ted Powell had his chair caning and seatweaving business in Canton for 15 years, providing chair caning and other seatweaving services in the surrounding area before moving to Nebraska.

My mother was the Extension Service agent for Dukes County on Martha’s Vineyard – what a great place to grow up!! She taught me how to refinish, cane, and rush furniture back in the sixties when I was about ten years old.

In Canton, I concentrated on single-strand caning, pressed cane, paper rush, pre-twisted natural rush, and Danish cord. I intend to continue practicing these skills and incorporate other seat weaving types here in Bellevue as the need arises.

In addition, I provide minor restoration, re-gluing, and refinishing. My turn-around times vary depending on what is needed and the complexity of the work. However, because I am “retired,” I can respond quickly.

Chair caning expert Helen Cribbs, owner of Chairs Caned in Delaware, OH (2019 new city location) provides experienced and fair-priced handwoven and pressed cane, plus wide binding cane in several patterns. (I now refrain from taking on wicker & fibre rush).

I have been in this business for over 30 years and since I work from home so my pricing stays reasonable. When possible, I offer pick-up and delivery within a reasonable distance from my shop.

Carrie Weiss, owner of Black Swamp Seat Weaving, LTD, was taught to weave by her grandmother at the early age of 15.

Her grandmother patiently taught her to take pride in her work, weave the best she possibly can, and to continually challenge herself.

After 45+ years, she continues to do this to this very day.

Over the years since Carrie first began weaving, she has expanded her abilities to include ALL forms of weaving, such as, hand cane, blind cane, cane webbing, rush, splint, and wicker.
