First blog post for Weavin’ Wicker Woman in the New Year 2012

The Wicker Woman-Cathryn Peters Although this is not the first day in the new year, it is my first post for the year.

One of the things I’m going to try to impliment again this year is to be more productive here on the blog and make posts more often and consistently. If you blog, have you made a similar goal for your blog?

Hubby and I spent the holidays with our children, grandchildren and other relatives and had a very nice end for 2011 and beginning of the New Year 2012.

Now today, we are both spending time in our shops. He’s doing “car stuff” in the garage and I’m straightening up my “art studio.” Both in the same building, but each in our own little “hobbit” hole. Will be posting pictures of both here soon.

And now, maybe you’d like to read my very first blog post written EIGHT years ago on July 16, 2004. Enjoy!

  1. Well, here it goes my first blog and this is 2012. Maybe I will look back in years to come and laugh at this one too!
    A little back ground first:
I have been weaving baskets since 1985 and I also do chair caning. My passion is weaving deer antler baskets. To keep up with the times and to add a little extra income we are working on our first web site. I am trying to cover all of my bases and need some advice. We would like to know if there are any restrictions on selling deer antler baskets via the web? We live in Iowa and do not have any restrictions in this state that I have found. I realize that each state has their own laws but I have not found any disclaimers on business web sites restricting sales to other states. I know that many of you have web sites that sell antler baskets so any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

    1. Hi Becky,

So happy to see that you are also in the same business as I am! Isn’t doing the chair caning rewarding? We are able to help so many people continue to use, preserve and pass on to the next generation their prized family heirlooms and furniture that might have been taken to the dump.

When did you start weaving the antler baskets and have you taken any of my antler basket classes or purchased any of my antler basket patterns? What made you decide to begin making that particular type?

Since I’ve been weaving my own original design (OOAK) antler baskets since 1990 and have been blogging about them here and writing about them in my old newsletter, there’s a vast amount of information right here at your fingertips if you will go through the Archives of the blog for the past EIGHT years!

But to answer your big question about the legality of selling antlers and the baskets, it’s incumbent upon you to obey the laws of the states where you will be selling and for the customer to also know their laws of possession regarding antlers. You can go to the state’s Department of Natural Resources and the Fish and Wildlife division, some call it one thing and some call it the other, to examine their respective sale, transport and possession laws.

    1. I hear you there, SewLadySew! It’s very hard to keep up on your blogging, websites and all the social media outlets especially when you are a sole proprietor of your business or an individual artist and have to do it all yourself! Hang in there, tomorrow’s another day! Cathryn
