FRIDAY FRIENDS–Chair Caning

May 15th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Three founding members of The SeatWeavers’ Guild, Jan Noal, Lee Long and Sally Jackson were recently featured in the Akron Beacon Journal for the chair caning classes they teach.

These gals have been volunteering their chair caning skills for years, teaching classes at the Lion’s Lodge in  Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to mostly senior citizens. Read all about them and how they are passing on the art and craft of chair caning, and be sure to look at all the fantastic pictures, too.

FREE Wall Basket Pattern

February 16th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Have you ever wondered how to create those beautiful arrow pattern weaves using flat reed that you see on so many cute baskets? Can’t figure it out for yourself and don’t have a pattern to follow yet, need some help?

Here’s a really neat FREE step-by-step basketweaving tutorial on “Weaving an Arrow Wall Basket“  by Linda Scherz Allen that’s posted on her on her website, AdirondackBasketry.com

http://adirondackbasketry.com/tour/tour.htm

I rediscovered this pattern tutorial (saw it the first time, several months ago),  while browsing the brochure for the Heritage Basketry Guild’s Mid-Summer Weave that takes place on July 23 & 24, 2010 in Dayton, Ohio. Linda is one of the featured teachers here!

Be sure to see the Mid-Summer Weave and the rest of the full line-up of basketry events on the Events Calendar on WickerWoman.com, just made some more recent additions, too!

Enjoy!

For any of you chair caners that might be sitting on the fence trying to decide whether or not to attend the 2nd Annual SeatWeavers’ Guild Gathering in Nelsonville, Ohio on July 31-August 2, 2009, let me tell you it’s nothing to miss!

We have a great line-up of chair caning demonstrators that will be showcasing the intricate weaves of the Star of David, Blind Caning, English Patterns, Daisy Chain, Spiderweb, Mexican Rush, Wicker Daisy and more.
If you’ve ever had questions about these weaves, or wondered how to do them, now is your chance to see how the pros do it. Have fun–Watch, learn and participate!

There will be tents and canopies set up on the grounds of Hocking College at Robbins Crossing so you can watch the demonstrations and pass from one to another easily. As well as the annual members meeting and dinner. Be sure to bring any tools, tips and hints that you’d like to share with others. Dress appropriately for an outdoors summer event. Bring the sunscreen and the umbrellas, be prepared for whatever!

This event is open to guild members only, so be sure to send in your membership application and registration for the Gathering ASAP! You don’t want to miss another historic event of the first official chair caning guild in America — The SeatWeavers’ Guild.

MONDAY MENTION–A Hole in the Basket Primitives

May 4th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Whoops! I almost forgot to post my MONDAY MENTION today and here it is 5:20 PM!

Last week I stumbled upon a terrific blog here on Blogger.com called A Hole in the Basket Primitives, written by a gal named Ann. What I really enjoyed reading about was the post from April 29th about the Basket Shop at Historic Sauder Village, (located in Archbold, OH) that blog owner Ann works at and weaves for.

Another thing that caught my eye, is that she not only has this blog, but also has another one (tied into this one), for SELLING her baskets. Now, why didn’t I think of that? Great idea and wonderful traditional-type reed baskets, be sure to take a look here too, 1803 Ohio Farm Baskets.

I’m going out to Nelsonville, Ohio at the end of July for our SeatWeavers’ Guild Annual Gathering and will look up Archbold to see if I can swing by for a visit! Thanks for writing such a great little blog Ann and showing off your crafty basketweaving talents, among others! Happy Weaving, Ann! Congratulations on being my second MONDAY MENTION!

Chair Caning Guild Forming! July 13-15, 2007

July 1st, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

With only two short weeks before the first ever Chair Seat Weaver’s Guild organizational and creational meeting, things are coming together for what looks to be a very unique, interesting and insightful weekend for the chair caning community of weavers! The recreation 1880s village of Robbins Crossing in Nelsonville, Ohio is the place to be!

If you as an individual seatweaver, teacher, basketry guild member, business or Cane and Basket Supplier would like to join us on this momentous occasion, please register through Mindy King’s website http://www.chairweaver.com/ Actual cut-off date is today, July 1st, but we’ll still take a few stragglers if you hurry.

Come lend a hand and share your knowledge by adding your suggestions, meeting others in the filed, serving on the Board of Directors, sharing your bookkeeping or secretarial skills, or even grant writing abilities. We will be applying for non-profit status too, so if you excel in any of these areas and are desirous of seeing this group succeed, please let us know how you can help!

Already, there are between
25-30 chair seat weavers from across the country, binding together to form this tightly woven cohesive little niche group. Some are coming from as far away as Florida, Minnesota, Conneticut, New York and the Province of Ontario, Canada and most are “members” of the online Chair Caning Forum!

If you can’t make this first meeting, you can at least keep tabs on the events through this blog, Mindy’s site and by visiting the Seatweaving Forum at http://disc.server.com/Indices/220033.html

Hope to see ya’ll in Nelsonville, Ohio on July 13-15, 2007!
Feel free to make posts here to add your encouragement or comments.
