National Basketry Organization

I just received the National Basketry Organization’s newsletter for Summer 2009. Whee! Ran right back from the mailbox to read it immediately!

I’ve been a member of the NBO ever since the first organizational meeting in 1999 at Arrowmont Arts & Crafts School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and now here they are, celebrating a ten year anniversary! Congrats to everyone that made it happen, especially President Michael Davis who has held that position since the group’s inception.

To celebrate this 10-year anniversary event, there’s a Biennial Convention, “Traditions & Innovations V” going on in Portland, Oregon on July 28 – August 2, 2009 at the Portland State University.

Exciting lineup of teachers, wonderful and challenging basket classes, (traditional, including Native American, and contemporary), with a wide variety of weaving materials and techniques that you don’t find at most regular basket conventions.

Sorry to say, I won’t be attending this year as our 2nd Annual Gathering of The SeatWeaver’s Guild, of which I am the President, is taking place that very same weekend in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Please consider becoming a member of the NBO to help promote and sustain this great organization, dedicated to the traditional basketmaker as well as contemporary basketmakers, supporters and suppliers.

"Web & Flow" National Basketry Organization's Exhibition

Members of the National Basketry Organization (NBO) are featured in an exhibition called, “Web & Flow” at the Textile Center, Joan Mondale Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota from March 6 — April 18, 2009.

I can’t wait to get down there to see this fantastic show and to see what baskets the 53 members submitted to the jury. I believe each artist was able to submit three pieces. Rebecca McEntee’s “Pyramid Vessel” graces the cover of the advertising postcard.

I missed the jury deadline so was not able to submit, but I see by the advertising postcard that many of my friends did get in! Congrats to everyone! I’m going this weekend so it should be fun. Will also visit family and grandkids while I’m down in the Twin Cities!

For all of you concerned about the National Basketry Organization’s website not working, it should be fixed shortly and back in operation, according to President Michael Davis. I spoke with him today and also with the webmaster via email, and they are both looking into the problem. http://www.NationalBasketry.org

The NBO is still in operation and growing with leaps and bounds, just suffering a minor hiccup with the website right now. Please hold in there and be patient you know how it can be sometimes in the cyber world!
