MONDAY MENTION–The SeatWeavers' Guild

August 31st, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

THANK YOU to all the dedicated, determined and delightful member organizers and to all attendees of The SeatWeavers’ Guild that made our 2nd Annual Gathering on July 31-August 3, 2009, such a great success!
Mindy King and Bonnie Rashleigh, the event planning committee, did another super job organizing the venue at Robbins Crossing in Nelsonville, OH.

Thanks to everyone on the staff at The Inn at Hocking College for the fine meeting room, motel rooms and restaurant facilities, too. We’d also like to thank Norm Fox, the Director at Robbins Crossing and his very amiable cooking crew for providing us the space and the fantastic home-cooked (on wood stove no less) lunch for all our attendees.

Our theme this year was “Adventures in Advanced Chair Caning Patterns” and the demonstrators provided quite an array of interesting patterns, which were unfamiliar to and never attempted by most of our attendees. Some demonstrations were actual hands-on audience experience, some explained their designs, some used hand-out instructions, and some used a combination of all three.

As before in previous years that we “gathered,” there in Nelsonville, there was a dedicated time for sharing of hints, tips and tools. All of this was to help broaden the individual chair seat weaver’s awareness of what’s available to them. And tips are also shared to help speed up the weaving process in a lot of cases, which makes us weavers more productive and improves each person’s bottom line in their business.

Then too, we had our annual general membership meeting, where we elected board members and ratified our by-laws. Incorporation of our chair caning guild is in process as we speak.

Our new Executive Board consists of:

Myself as President, Cathryn Peters
Vice President, Mindy King
Secretary, Allene Hooper
Treasurer, Mical Wilmoth Carton
Member-at-Large, Tom Holtkamp
Member-at-Large, Pierre Amyotte
Member-at-Large, Joyce Curtis
Committee Heads:
Membership: Bonnie Krist
Newsletter & Historian: Jill Wood
Events: Mindy King
Parliamentarian: David W. Dick
Website & Publicity: Cathryn Peters

Please take a look at our website http://www.SeatWeaversGuild.org where we will be adding the 2009 picture albums soon.

MONDAY MENTION–The SeatWeavers' Guild

May 18th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Today’s Mention is about The SeatWeavers’ Guild, a relatively new chair caning guild that began on the Seatweaving, Chair Caning Forum and was organized at the Founder’s Meeting in the summer of 2007 in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Last year we held our first annual workshop and meeting again in Nelsonville, OH at Robbins Crossing, a recreation of a 1800s village; a perfect setting for our old-time craft of chair caning.

Here is a video I just created and put on YouTube.com under the keywords “chair caning” from some of the pictures taken during that meeting:
