WEDNESDAY WICKER WISDOM-Babies on Cabinet Cards

June 10th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Aren’t these just the cutest pictures of babies posing on the fancy Victorian wicker photography studio furniture? All of these wicker posing chairs have elaborate scrolls, curlicues, bird cage legs and Star of David cane backs.

And it’s really unusual to have a picture of a laughing baby as in the photo above. Photography studio was Hissing & Son in La Grange, Indiana

Cabinet cards were first introduced in 1863 by Windsor & Bridge in London and are similar to the earlier and smaller carte-de-visite (CDV) that was first seen in 1850.

These cabinet cards from the 1880s-1890s were black & white photographs mounted on hard card stock, with enough room around the outside to post the photographer’s studio name and address, usually in fancy cursive script.

The reason they were called “cabinet cards” is because they were large enough to be set on furniture or cabinets in the parlor where everyone could see them from across the room.

Cabinet cards were also placed in large, specially made photo albums, which became one of the best ways to keep the family photos, and were as important in some families as the family Bible. If you’re lucky enough to run across one in an antique store or flea market, you will have quite a record of American history in your hands.

Country Living Trials and Tribulations

June 9th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Yesterday was such a beautiful day that I got up and went for a power walk right away, bright and early in the morning. Now, I’m calling my walk a “power” walk because it took all the power I could muster to get out there again and do something about the extra weight I’ve put on over the winter!

Like I said, it was a beautiful morning and the birds were chirping to beat the band. Sun was shining and the temperature was pleasantly warm, but not too hot and the wind was slightly blowing, so it all made the deed exciting and the time spent was very worthwhile in the long run.

I had heard on the weather report that we were in for more rain that evening, so I took out the trusty gas push mower and took a stab at beating down the lawn that had grown to about a foot in the last couple weeks.

You see, I missed getting out and mowing the lawn when the sun was out last week, had too many other things that also needed my attention, so I put it off for another day. Well, when another day came, it was raining and raining and raining and proceeded to rain for the next three or four days. Thankfully, one of our really nice neighbors swung by with his riding lawn mower and finished the job up right!

So, by the time I got our large yard mowed and was also done with the power walk, I had put on more miles on my little feet than they’d seen in years! Also forgot to stretch before and after my walk (or the mowing), so come this morning, I could hardly get out of bed. And it was raining yet again…

Happy Birthday, Son!

February 14th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Thirty five years ago today on February 13, 1975 our son Hans William was born! Although Dad and I can’t be with you and your family to help you celebrate today, our love, thoughts and best wishes are there with you always.

I tried to find a picture of you when you were a baby that I could post here to embarrass you. But of course I couldn’t locate one, but I’ll keep searching and post when I do discover one.

Love you baby!

Please bear with me while I work on another background for this blog. I know that the font color in the body and also in the sidebar is hard to read on this background, and I’m trying to change that, sorry. Will post more about what’s going on in the northwoods of Minnesota ASAP, promise!

Honoring our Veteran's Today!

November 11th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Suspending our normal WEDNESDAY WICKER WISDOM column today, and instead taking a moment to thank the brave men and women, our Veterans, that have been protecting our country for so many years.

Both my father, who was in the Navy, and husband, who was in the Army served our country, and for that I am eternally grateful and proud.

Thank you to each and every one of the servicemen and women, those that have passed and those still with us, for guarding and watching out for our interests here and abroad.  One day of honor is hardly enough for all you’ve done in the name of our great country and its people. We salute you all, and God Bless You!
