Chair Caning, Basketweaving and TV Watching

November 14th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

I almost forgot to post today! And really do want to continue to make daily posts during the month of November since I’ve signed up and pledged to do that through National Blog Posting Month at http://www.nablopomo.com/

But with all I had going on today, here it is 11:36 pm and I’m just getting around to posting! Whew! My day started out just fine with the exception of a light patter of rain. But this was the day that we scheduled Dish Network to come out and move our TV dish from a pole in the yard, to the top of our garage, so I could watch TV in my new studio!

All went well however and now I have the luxury of weaving my antler baskets for the galleries and custom orders while watching my favorite soap operas and dramas! That might turn out to be a bad thing though, and I will need to monitor my TV watching habits to make sure it doesn’t overtake me.

I have deliberately kept the TV out of my work area for many years, because I noticed my production slowing waaaay down when I watched too much! Used to have the television in my studio in Zumbro Falls, Minnesota for a year or so when I first started leasing the building, but had to take it out so I was more productive. We’ll see if I’ve improved in my will over the years as I’ve aged–stay tuned.

I have several chair caning projects for customers in the works, but will need to take the weekend off, since our son and two-year old grandson are up visiting this weekend. Daddy is going deer hunting with Papa, so maybe I can keep Johnny entertained by baking cookies or perhaps teaching him how to weave chair seats, ya’ think?

My granddaughter thought it was a lot of fun, helping Nanny Granny work on her cane chairs, hope Johnny follows suit!

Quiet, rainy, basketweaving day!

August 16th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

It’s raining again today and the wind has been kicking up rather strongly, but every so often some rays of sunshine stream down, making for a very beautiful tableau. Wonder if we’ll be fortunate enough to see a rainbow soon?

Thinking about doing laundry in Cook, which is about 10 miles away to the north and then going over to the artesian well to get some more drinking water, which is about 10 miles to the south of us. Need a break from Bee Skep weaving and doing chair caning for a customer.

Would like to also go cut some wheat and barley for making more skeps, but since it’s just been raining the fields will be pretty soupy and wet. Sitting here listening to Classical Minnesota Public Radio is soooo relaxing and peaceful. Maybe, just maybe I will put everything off until tomorrow and work on my website instead! Until tomorrow, then!

Basketmaster's Weavings Blog

March 17th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Not too long ago I stumbled across a really neat, very interesting blog by a woman out in New Mexico. The basketmakers name is Nancy Jacobs and her blog is called Basketmaster’s Weavings

She’s relatively new to the blogging scene, but is doing a terrific job at spreading the word about basketmaking; she’s offering Tuesday Technique Tips, a couple videos, instruction book recommendations and much, much more.

Take a look as soon as you can and tell Nancy, “I found you through the Weavin’ Wicker Woman’s blog.” Happy Weaving Everyone!

May 31st, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

RARE RIVER CANE GATHERING WORKSHOP –
Presented by Cherokee basketmaker Robin McBride Scott on June 24, 2007, 10:00am meeting at 14029 Gateway Drive, Edmond, OK 73013.

Email Peggy Brennan at pbweave@yahoo.comor for more information phone: 405 615 3702. Reserve your place as soon as possible by writing a check made out to Robin McBride Scott. Mail the check to Peggy Brennan, PO Box 5404, Edmond, OK 73083-5404.

This information is from Robin regarding the workshop:
Students will learn about identification, selecting and the processing of rivercane. I will bring fresh cane with me for the students to try their hand at processing the cane themselves. We are planning on visiting a canebrake so students can see first hand how to select the cane. I will cover the process of dyeing the cane, its many uses and the different styles of basketry and mat making. You will make a 8″x 9″ twill straight mat using commercial materials that will be bound with rivercane and hickory bark.

The cost per student will be $35.00 for Oklahoma Native American Basketweavers Association (ONABA) members and $50 for others. ONABA members will receive priority. You may join ONABA by downloading a membership form at www.onab.org (donations will be accepted for Robin as she priced this workshop very low). You can also read the online newsletter, Renewing Traditions, for more information about Robin.
