Revisiting the Powder Post Beetle — Have you ever noticed little piles of white or tan “dust” or “powder” on the table or shelf after you picked up a basket? If so, that little pile of dust is actually powdered wood, reed, ash or willow from that basket that you just moved or picked up. The powder post beetle is the culprit and they can cause a great deal  of damage to your baskets and other wooden objects like furniture and even your house, if you’re not careful!

The female lays her eggs in the wood and then when the larvae hatch, they use the wood as nourishment, chewing and boring into it, causing small, telltale holes to appear. The powder is a by-product from the chewing of the powder post beetle.

Most often excess moisture and heavy humidity attracts the bugs to the wood, and in this case, the basket. Treatment ranges from applying insecticides or professional fumigation to putting the offending basket in the deep freeze to kill the infestation. But beware, a regular household self-defrosting refrigerator/freezer combinations will not destroy the critters because they don’t get cold enough. The colder temperatures of a deep freezer, chest freezer or the like, will usually take care of it though.

After the basket is completely dry and free of any larvae, you might try applying a sealer such as a varnish, polyurethane or urethane on the bottom of the basket at least, to protect against further infestation. I have also heard of putting the basket in a garbage bag and adding a dish or pan of ammonia to the bag. Supposedly, the ammonia will kill the bugs too, but I have no personal experience with this method.

MONDAY MENTION — BasketMakers Blog

May 11th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Well, Good Morning Everyone! Another bright, sun shiny morning up here in the northland of Minnesota!

Today’s MONDAY MENTION is a relatively new (2007), basketry blog I just discovered called “BasketMakers” written by Susi Nuss. In her online journal she updates the viewers on current basket exhibitions, new workshops/classes and also notifies basket collectors of any upcoming auctions.

Susi is primarily a black ash basketmaker and in addition is a woman who wears many hats in the basketry community. She also maintains a popular domain site, BasketMakers.com, which is a very, very comprehensive website for basketmakers that covers just about everything you ever wanted to know about the craft of basketweaving!

Visit Susi’s blog and be sure to Google Follow (the small box in the side navigation on most blogs), so you don’t miss a thing. And be sure to leave a comment, saying that you found her BasketMakers blog right here on the MONDAY MENTION of Weavin’ Wicker Woman’s blog. Enjoy!

The Lake Country Basket Guild and its members were featured in an online article by columnist Laurel Walker from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper on February 16, 2008.

Read all about basket guild members Ann Snider, Pam Talsky, Denise Arzberger, Deb Longtin and others on this interesting piece, which certainly does help to promote basketweaving in a positive manner!

As they mention in the article, basket guilds can be found on the Internet, and I of course have several listed on my website that you might be interested in checking out. http://www.WickerWoman.com/links/basketguilds Enjoy!

Snow, Snow and More Snow!

December 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

December is coming in with a BIG BANG! We are under Winter Storm Warning, expecting 16 inches of snow tonight!!!!

One nice thing though, snow means it’s going to warm up a bit! It’s actually warmed up from 11 below zero this morning to to 19 degrees above this evening! Wheeee!

We have at least eight inches of snow already that fell today on top of a previous 3-4 inches and more is falling fast! Time to get out the 4×4 truck, I guess!

Good time to stay indoors weaving antler baskets and getting ready for my solo exhibition in Virginia, MN during March and April, 2008! Stay safe and warm ya’ll.
