Peters with antler baskets

On March 2, 2011 at 6 p.m. I will be speaking about my craft of antler basketmaking at the Ely Minnesota Public Library as the first of a three part series at libraries across the Iron Range.

In December of last year I was honored to be contacted by an Arrowhead Library System board member to see if I’d be interested in giving the presentations included as part of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Library Legacy and the Minnesota State Arts Board.

I love sharing my art with others so this lecture will be lots of fun to do. Weather is supposed to be fairly cold, but all of the folks living in Ely are well used to that!

The audience attending my presentation will get a close-up view of the baskets and short demonstration as to how the antler “speaks” to me, telling me what shape and design the basket is to be. I’ll also be bringing some baskets in various stages of completion so they can see what the weaving process encompasses.

So, if you are in the Ely, Minnesota area on Wednesday, March 2nd, please stop and say “Hello” at the Ely Public Library at 30 South First Avenue East or call (218)365-5140 for more information.

This project was funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s art and cultural heritage.

Weaver’s Words Basket Digest–Monday Mention

February 14th, 2011 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Today’s topic on Monday Mention is Weaver’s Words, a weekly Yahoo! Groups basket digest managed and moderated by Bonnie Krist.

This email basketry digest was originally started in 1997 by 26-year old David Collins from Indianapolis, Indiana with only 71 subscribers. It later swelled to well over 1,000 subscribers, connecting to each other from the United States as well as from several countries overseas.

Weaver’s Words email digest was the one online lifeline that basketmakers had at the time, we were all proud members of a very close-knit community of basket weavers.

Bonnie Krist weaving a rush footstool-TSWG When David passed away in 2005, Bonnie Easterbrook Krist asked David’s mother Norma, if she could please continue with this vital basketry digest. At the time, David’s Weaver’s Words was just about the only way that basketmakers could connect with each other.

Every week we would watch our email boxes with anticipation of its arrival. This of course. was years before the social networks of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn were even thought of!

How does Weaver’s Words work?–Basketweavers (and chair caners) subscribe to the list through the Weaver’s Words Yahoo! Groups.

Then post a message or submit their questions about basket weaving, or make posts about the workshops they’ve attended, or give website links they think others will be interested in.

Then the moderator, Bonnie Krist, reviews the posts, accumulates them into an email message and sends out to all the subscribers or members, on a weekly basis. Sometimes personal commitments and schedules interfere with the delivery, but most of the time, Weaver’s Words is sent on a regular weekly basis.

Here’s an online copy of one of the very early basketry digests that you might find very interesting reading: http://www.angelfire.com/art/weaverswords/WeaversWordsV1I1.txt

Bonnie has done a wonderful job with the basket digest list and is to be commended! She’s a basketmaker and chair caner herself and is also a founding member and membership chairperson of The SeatWeavers’ Guild, Inc., all of which keeps this lady pretty busy!
