Exhibit of Basketry Teachers

May 14th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Three of my antler baskets were submitted for an exhibit called, “Celebration of Basketry Teachers and Their Classes” at the Phillip Dickel Basket Museum and Gallery in the Amana Colonies in West Amana, Iowa. The exhibit will be open from May 24 to October 5, 2009.

Each year since 2005, Joanna Schanz and her crew at the Broom & Basket Shop have an exhibit at the basket museum to celebrate basketry. My baskets were also in the 2007 exhibit, “Baskets of Yesterday and Today: Baskets from Iowa Basket Weavers Guild.” And this year, I was invited by Joanna to submit an example of my personal style work and two samples of basket classes I teach.

Since each and every one of my antler baskets is unique and one-of-a-kind, it was difficult for me to choose the one to send to represent my work. But I decided on a personal favorite that I have in my private collection made in 2004 called, “Whitetail Flame” Antler Basket Sculpture.

For the two class representations, I chose two of my very early baskets that are still as popular today as they were when they debuted in the 1990′s, “Ebony & Ivory” Antler Melon Basket and “Smoked Reed, God’s Eye Antler” Melon Basket. Each has its own challenges for the students, and are not easy, beginner level baskets to complete in the 8-hour time limitations of class!

If you are traveling this summer, be sure to make the Phillip Dickel Basket Museum and Gallery and the Broom and Basket Shop in West Amana, Iowa your destination. Catch this fantastic array of baskets in the exhibit, “Celebration of Basketry Teachers and Their Classes.”

"Web & Flow" National Basketry Organization's Exhibition

March 18th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Members of the National Basketry Organization (NBO) are featured in an exhibition called, “Web & Flow” at the Textile Center, Joan Mondale Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota from March 6 — April 18, 2009.

I can’t wait to get down there to see this fantastic show and to see what baskets the 53 members submitted to the jury. I believe each artist was able to submit three pieces. Rebecca McEntee’s “Pyramid Vessel” graces the cover of the advertising postcard.

I missed the jury deadline so was not able to submit, but I see by the advertising postcard that many of my friends did get in! Congrats to everyone! I’m going this weekend so it should be fun. Will also visit family and grandkids while I’m down in the Twin Cities!

If you happen to be in the neighborhood of the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff, Missouri before January 25, 2009, be sure to stop in to see the current basketry exhibit, “Holding It Together: The Art of Baskets”, Baskets of Missouri by Missouri Basket Artists. An unusually creative exhibit of Baskets.

I am fortunate to be a member of the Missouri Basketweavers Guild, so have three antler basket sculptures included in the exhibition, which are for sale. One of the antler basket pieces, “Antler Ark” is featured on the exhibition opening page.

Enjoy the show and see it soon before the month-long exhibition is over!
