TUESDAY STUDIO TIP–Tax deductions for the Self-Employed !

Want to Lower the Amount of Self-Employment Taxes You’re Paying and Put More Money in Your Pocket?

Great Tips from Home Business Maven™ Barbara Brabec:

Barbara Brabec is the author of Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions, an eBook specifically written to help Schedule C filers who are tired of giving so much of their home-business profits to the IRS in the form of self-employment taxes.

“In talking with home-business owners nationwide,” says Barbara, “I’ve learned that most have no idea at all of the many tax advantages of a homebased business. They think they are doing everything right when they hire a tax preparer, accountant or CPA to do their taxes, but if they haven’t kept track of all their expenses in the first place, they will end up paying higher taxes than necessary.

I’ve worked with several different CPAs through the years, and none of them ever suggested that I might be overlooking a deduction. Always so busy at tax time, they just took the figures I gave them and dropped them in the appropriate slots on the tax forms, often making mistakes in the process.

“Even when you believe you have a qualified tax preparer or accountant, you may have problems simply because tax regulations are so complicated, so confusing, and often so vague that they can be interpreted in different ways.

While an aggressive accountant may interpret a particular tax rule in such a way that it becomes a valuable tax deduction for you, a more conservative accountant might say, ‘I wouldn’t take this deduction if I were you because . . .’ (which could cost you the loss of a legal tax deduction if you’re less than savvy about taxes).

Brabec warns that it’s simply not prudent to put all your faith and trust in your tax adviser. “You must do your homework if you want to claim every legal Schedule C tax deduction to which you are entitled,” she emphasizes. “If you’re serious about saving money, and aren’t an expert on taxes, you need to inform yourself on this topic.

Always waiting until the last minute in April to think about your tax situation is a BIG mistake because there are things you could be doing throughout the year, and especially at the end of each year, to lower the amount of self-employment taxes you’ll have to pay on April 15. I know the topic of taxes is considered boring to most business owners, but saving money isn’t a boring topic, and this book isn’t boring, either,” Barbara concludes.

Barbara’s eBook is “. . .humorous, entertaining and chock full of tax tips and information to help you improve your bottom line,” says Bill Ronay, Events2000.com. “It will help you navigate the maze of Schedule C Deductions and come out on the other side with a fistful of deductions,” says Traci Vanover, CreatetheDream.com.

Barbara Brabec's Newest Book-Tax Saving Strategies for Self-Employed

November 10th, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

How to Shelter Thousands of Dollars of Home Business Profits from Self-Employment and Federal Taxes

Barbara Brabec’s new ebook, Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions: Proven Strategies for Cutting SE Taxes to the Bone, offers a crash course in how to save a bundle on taxes and become a more educated and savvy taxpayer.

Naperville, IL, November 8, 2008 – “If you operate a business from home and file a Schedule C form, there are many things you can do right now to lower the amount of self-employment, federal and state taxes you will have to pay on this year’s business profits,” says Barbara Brabec, author of Homemade Money and seven other books for home-business owners. Her new ebook, Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions, includes the proven strategies she has used for more than thirty-five years to cut her self-employment taxes to the bone.

Brabec, self-employed for most of her life, has been helping home-business owners to greater financial success since the early 70s. “It’s not how much you earn in your business, but how much you can keep . . . away from the IRS,” she emphasizes. “Your goal should be to get as many deductions as possible listed on your Schedule C form to keep your self-employment taxes as low as possible. This will also lower the amount of federal and state taxes you will have to pay.”

The topic of taxes is considered boring to many, but saving money isn’t a boring topic, and this book isn’t boring, either. “It’s humorous, entertaining and chock full of tax tips and information to help you improve your bottom line,” says Bill Ronay, Events2000.com. It’s also a crash course in how to save a bundle on self-employment taxes and become a more educated and savvy taxpayer.

“Accountants rarely (if ever) remind business owners about deductions they might be overlooking, or tax strategies they might implement,” says Brabec. “They just work with the figures they are given. That’s why it’s so important for business owners to make sure they haven’t overlooked any deductions, and that they understand how different tax strategies can lower their taxes overall.”

Included in Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions is a checklist of 65 Schedule C deductions (with discussions on most of them), plus detailed information on eleven categories of indirect and direct expenses related to the Home Office Deduction (one so many business owners are reluctant to take for fear of an IRS audit). But this is not what’s likely to trigger an audit, says Brabec.

Emphasis is also given to the tax benefits of hiring a spouse or child to help with the business, as well as to the tax dangers of hiring independent contractors (especially to craft businesses who may be using homeworkers to produce goods for sale). More tax-safe options for hiring outside help are suggested in this chapter.

Tucked here and there throughout this helpful book are two dozen special tips on such things as why you should think twice before making your spouse a partner in your business instead of an employee; why married women who use a different name for their business may be losing Social Security credits by filing a joint return with their husband; and why selecting the wrong auto expense method in the beginning can be a costly mistake.

Closing the book is a Resource Chapter that includes 75 links to tax-related web sites and articles, each offering additional information on specific tax deductions or strategies discussed in the book.

This 62-page PDF ebook, ($27 US), is available for instant download on the author’s website at http://www.barbarabrabec.com/.. Barbara Brabec’s Newsletter features my Shop Cat, Don Gatto!

August 6th, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Barbara Brabec craft author and home-business expert, has been a friend of mine for many years. I’ve followed her work through all her books (been in several of them, too), and then on her website and newsletter as she was building them. http://www.BarbaraBrabec.com

She put out a request a few months ago in her newsletter that she wanted pictures of everyone’s “shop cat” or “office cat,” so I sent a few of my squirrely cat, Don Gatto.

I’ve posted here about him before–he loves to hang around on my shoulders and neck as I work in the studio, trying to cane chairs for customers and make antler baskets.

Barbara posted Don Gatto’s pictures and my paragraph or so detailing him, on her website and it was in the August newsletter, also.

Spend some time on Barbara’s website, it’s chock full of helpful advice on many topics ranging from how to set up a home-based business, to running computers, and designing websites. http://www.BarbaraBrabec.com

I highly recommend this website–it’s a MUST read for anyone that has a small business, home-based business, craft business or is an aspiring author, writer or website designer!
