First Snow of the Season

October 27th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

THURSDAY THOUGHTS–When we woke up this morning at around 6 a.m. it was snowing ever so slightly. But by 8 or 9 a.m. we had about three inches of snow on the ground and the flakes were coming down fast and furiously.

First snow fall of the season -- October 27, 2011

As you can see by the picture above, it was quite overcast and gloomy with a temperature of only 31 degrees. The sun looks like it’s going to come out pretty soon, and I hope that’s the case.

I’m driving up to North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota today which is 150 miles away, to teach an antler basket class over the weekend. Don’t want to run in to problems, hope the driving goes smoothly and I make it there in one piece.

I was trying to remember when we had our first snow fall last year, and wanted to look it up in my annual journal, but must have packed it away already. And made no mention of it in last year’s blog posts either in October or November, although there is this one that talks about our coldest temperature so far of -22 degrees in December 2010 that you might enjoy reading. http://www.wickerwoman.com/mn-sub-zero-weather.html

Enjoy the coming winter and have a great weekend! What are you doing over the weekend and how’s your weather?

Stowe Basketry Festival

April 1st, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

June 7-13, 2010

Following right on the heels of the post about my experience with Russian birch bark basketmaker Vladimir Yarish, comes the notice that Cass Schorsch, our American birch bark basketmaker, author and techer is retiring!

I don’t know how many of you subscribe to the various basketmaker newsletters from cane and basket suppliers and/or basket guilds or basketry schools, but I subscribe to a lot.

When I get these newsletters I comb through all of them and then post the relevant information about classes, exhibits and such to the Events Calendar of my domain website, WickerWoman.com.

So, as I was reading through Merry Vigneau’s Stowe Basketry email newsletter this morning and reading about her upcoming  Stowe Basketry Festival , I noticed the blurb that Cass was retiring! And that her three birch bark basket classes at Stowe would be the last time students would see her there!

I had the pleasure of taking a contemporary dyed and smoked rattan reed and bark class from Cass way back in the 1990s. The Iowa Basketweavers Guild offered a workshop and it was held at the Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa. I still have that first bark basket that I made with her, although it’s packed away so I can’t show you a picture of it.

And I also have just about every basketry book she’s ever been published in. What a treasure Cass Schorsch has been to the basketry community for all these years. We’ll sure miss you Cass!

So get your reservation in if you’d like to experience weaving birch bark baskets with Cass. And don’t miss the other terrific line-up of teachers including Keilo Takeda from Tokyo, Japan with her new Eco-Craft paper strips, Jeremy Mitchell, Flo Hoppe, Karen Woods, Mary Smith-Stokes, Dianne Stanton, Deanna Savoy, Wendy Durfey and John Excell from England with a chair caning class.

Happy Weaving Everyone!
Enjoy the Stowe Basketry Festival.

Minnesota Public Radio

February 27th, 2010 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

I absolutely love our Minnesota Public Radio that we have here in the State, it’s the best by far of any other public radio stations I’ve listened to in any other state!

My favorite section of MPR is the Classical station, although MPR also has a Contemporary station for the younger crowd and the News station for those that want to be constantly on top of the daily happenings and events.

However, I am not a fan of opera and that’s what’s been playing for the last few minutes this Saturday afternoon as I’m weaving more antler baskets for the galleries, and writing my blog, of course!

I’m trying desperately to acquire the taste for opera, as I am a singer myself, and feel that in order to broaden my horizons, should like all types of music. At least, that’s what I’ve been telling myself all my life.

I really do appreciate the dedication to the art the singers have and all the time and effort it’s taken them to attain their level of expertise. Maybe if I understood the Italian language it was sung in, that might help matters, however I still don’t care for the music even when it’s sung in English!

But “it’s off with your head” for today, OPERA! I’m changing the radio station right away! Maybe I can find some jazz or Celtic music or something else like that to keep my spirits up and keep me in the mood for weaving lots of antler baskets today.

How about you? What kind of music do you prefer to listed to as you work or weave?

Keep weavin’ the threads of life!  Cathryn
