10th Annual Silver Dollar City Basket Seminar

June 5th, 2008 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Everyone had a great time at the 10th Annual Silver Dollar City Basket Seminar in Branson, Missouri last month. Lots of wonderful and innovative classes were offered by the teachers and the students went home with some great treasures that they wove over the May 15-17th weekend.

I took a few pictures of the students in two of my three antler basket classes, and feel badly that I forgot to take any from the last class. Those gals did a great job, and I’d like to show their accomplishments too, but can’t. Sorry gals!

The Basket Seminar will be held in Branson again next year on April 14, 15 & 16th. Stay tuned for updates and check out all the remaining basketry classes for this year on my Events Calendar page on WickerWoman.com

Basket Workshop Great Success!

The Headwaters Basketmakers Workshop was a big hit last month in Bemidji, Minnesota!

It was a weekend of chocolate and basketry and boy, did we indulge! The theme was Chocolate, so it was everywhere, at meals and in the classes.

There were about 50 attendees taking all sorts of basket classes from the traditional reed baskets to my contemporary antler baskets and birch bark baskets.

It’s been hinted that in coming years the theme might be “Return of the Trolls,” so stay tuned!

National Basketry Organization Good For Seatweavers, Too!

May 21st, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

How many of you are members of the National Basketry Organization? If you’re not already a member, I would highly suggest you join, if for no other reason than to receive the quarterly newsletter. It’s great and in full color, telling all about basketry events and features across the country. http://www.NationalBasketry.org

I just received my postcard reminder for the 2007 Convention: Traditions & Innovations IV a few days ago. It will be held at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN on October 3-7, 2007.

Besides the list of basket classes, seminars and keynote speakers, is a seminar and class by Jo Russin, John C. Campbell Folk School teacher, on “The Evolution of Chair Caning.”

As I’ve often preached on the Seatweaving Forum, through my ezine, and in classes that I teach, joining basketry guilds can set a seatweaver up for many chances to spread the word about seatweaving through seminars, classes, and articles in guild periodicals!

If you are interested in joining the NBO, your local basketry guild, or a regional or state guild, check the list of organizations on the Basket Guilds page of my website.

I live way up in northern Minnesota, remote and removed from any guilds, (the nearest one is in Duluth, 90 miles away), but yet I belong to about 10-15 guilds a year, rotating them across the country. Each year, joining however many my pocket-book can handle.

As a guild member, you are privy to the membership roster, by-laws, notices of workshops, classes and conventions to propose classes to or classes to take, plus most of them have fantastic newsletters that you can learn a great deal from. Or, if you are a writer, you can submit articles, which may lead to TV spots, radio deals or even book offers!

Antler Basket Sculpture Class!

February 19th, 2007 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Let your creative juices flowing! Enroll in my Antler Basket Sculputure Class and spend a relaxing and creative week at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina.

You will learn all the “tricks of the trade” I use in creating these unique antler basket sculptures. Plus, hone your basketweaving skills and learn new ones on balance, turn backs, drilling proceedures and what works and what doesn’t.

An Intermediate to Advanced weaving level with prior rib-basketry experience is preferred, but others can also be accommodated. All students will be able to complete at least one basket sculpture using either mule deer or fallow deer antlers and a plethora of commercially obtained and natural gathered materials that instructor will provide.

Advanced students are encouraged to explore both wall hangings and table-top varieties, as time permits. Request a catalog today from the John C. Campbell Folk School, (Cathryn’s Antler Basket Class is on pg. 55), and make your reservations ASAP, classes fill quickly!
