More Blog and Site Changes

HAVE YOU NOTICED THE CHANGES????

wicker rocker plant stand

Well, I’m not too sure what’s going on with me, maybe it’s anticipating the change in the seasons,(that hopefully will be coming soon), but we’ve just made more massive changes to both the blog and the website itself over the last couple weeks. Can you tell?

Started by changing from three columns to two, which presented problems of its own as far as affiliate boxes and widget placement and had to relocate the left sidebar navigation links to the top, just under the header graphic. Now you’ll need to click on whichever tab you want and then select from the drop-down menu for the page you want to see.

Added the Sharaholic bar at both the top and bottom of each page and post in the blog so you can share all the good stuff here with your friends and family. But think that might be overkill with them in both spots, how about you, what do you think?

Played around with all the widgets in the new right sidebar, trying to keep from having too many moving parts over there. Added the slideshow of the blog, so you could see what you’ve been missing if you are not a subscriber from way back already…

And added the Google+ box in case you wanted to add me to your circles. Also added the Pinterest follow button and a WickerWoman.com button, in case you’d like to use that on your own blog sidebar.

Then I got the bright idea that the header graphic that I’ve had since 2007 needed some jazzing up, seemed kinda stuffy and no longer fit the direction I’m going in with my business. Sooooo…

Contacted my WordPress guru and friend Christy Knowlton at christineknowlton.com to see if she was up for the redesign challenge on the header graphic. And luckily she was! So I told her what I was after, sent her some pictures and viola! Doesn’t it look nice?

This really captures the “umbrella purpose” and slogan of my business that I’ve had since 1999, which is “Weaving for Preservation, Education & Innovation”

The pictures are slightly different on the site header graphic and the blog header graphic, but on each one, the seatweaving and wicker restoration cover the “Preservation” aspect, the chair caning class picture covers the “Education” aspect and the contemporary antler basket pictures, cover the “Innovation,” aspect, don’t you think? And I love, love, love the green color.

INNOVATION

Well, please bop around the site and try out all the new widgets, drop-down menus, tabs and be sure to check out the blog and compare the differences. Then please make some comments below on this blog post.

Constructive criticism is welcomed, but don’t be too crewel. I definitely need to know if there’s something that doesn’t work right or you are exasperated with or don’t like, so I can try to fix it though. Happy Weaving! And enjoy the “new” site redesign, first major overhaul since I switched to WordPress back in 2007!

Russian Birch Bark Basketry Class

February 25th, 2012 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Ran across this Picasa slideshow this morning, that I forgot I had posted. It’s of the birch bark basketry class with instructor Russian Vladimir Yarish that was held in March 2010, up in Grand Marais, Minnesota at North House Folk School.  Enjoy!

Chair Caning Businesses on Facebook Pages

February 24th, 2012 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

FRIDAY FEATURE–Chair Caning on Facebook Pages

We are having a great time over on the Seatweaving & Chair Caning Forum with the discussion about making Facebook business pages for your chair caning business! Chair Caning Forum Logo 2011

I started the thread by telling the caning forum members that it’s an easy thing to do, setting up a business Facebook biz page, and is a great way for you to advertise and post pictures featuring your chair caning skills.

The Wicker Woman Facebook Fanpage

And then I began telling them some tricks of the trade on how to get the word out faster and better and get followers quickly.

In February of 2009, I began my own personal profile Facebook page as well as setting up my business Facebook page and currently have over 500 fans at
The Wicker Woman!

As many of you may not realize, when you first get your FB page, it’s assigned a name (that you choose), but then there’s a bunch of numbers and gobbly goop following that in the URL.

Now we all know that those URLs are hard to remember so, after your business page has 25 followers or more, you can request from Facebook for an easy to remember URL or name for your FB page. How cool is that? Remember too, that when you choose the name for your page, that it’s all case sensitive.

Here are some of the brand new Facebook Pages just made up within the last few days as a result of this discussion thread on the Chair Caning Forum, please go visit and become their latest fan! Make a comment there on the page and include your FB page URL (web address), so they know to also go to your fan page and “Like” you back.

And if you have your own web site or blog, be sure to link it to your Facebook business page and vice versa, make sure your Facebook business page has a prominent link back to your web site or blog.

Russian Birch Bark Basketry Class at North House Folk School

February 23rd, 2012 · 4 Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

What a delight it was when I opened my emails this morning to discover a post about the Russian Birch Bark Basketmaker,Vladimir Yarish , that Eric Taylor talked about in The Basketmaker’s Wife blog post.

I was one of Vladimir’s 15 students that weekend in March of 2010, up at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Five of us were long-time North House basketry teachers, but none of us had ever worked with Russian birch bark (directly from Russia, flown over with Yarish), nor had we experienced his teaching techniques before. He only demonstrates and talks about the baskets and does NOT give out patterns for you to follow along.

Until that March weekend, I had only made birch bark vases to teach in my classes–

This birch bark antler basket below was in a two-year traveling exhibit called, “All From One Birch” presented by North House Folk School featuring their instructors that teach birch crafts at the folk school.

And I also make and teach birch bark basket necklaces around the country–

And then I was fortunate to be there at North House Folk School to meet Vladimir and weave two marvelous birch bark baskets made using Russian birch bark. What a pleasure, something I will remember forever and be fortunate to have experienced.

Terms of Endearment–Valentine’s Day Wishes

February 23rd, 2012 · No Comments · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Terms of Endearment –Mr. Wicker Woman meant to be dear when he gave me a Valentine’s Day compliment last week, but…

I’ve been eating a lot of things I shouldn’t be lately, which makes my face puffy and eyes itchy and they water a lot.

So when Mr. Wicker Woman said, “Honey, the bags under your eyes have have dried up!” I took that as a quasi compliment until he also said, ” The downside is that it increased the wrinkles around your eyes, exponentially.”

Hahaha (not)! Geez, thanks! You know, it’s a good thing we love and adore each other and can laugh a lot together, otherwise I would have KILLED him for making that comment!

I really have to start writing all these “compliment” thingies down, because he’s zinging them in right and left lately and I have to admit, most really are quite funny. Anyway, they would be if aimed at someone else besides me!

This June 23rd we will be celebrating 39 years of wedded bliss, can you believe it? Wow! We are so different in temperment and everything else, with the exception of our core moral values, that our friends and family never thought we’d make it passed five years when we first got hitched.

John and Cathryn Peters Wedding Day June 23, 1973

As I age, things are not quite so pretty as they once were, meaning my face and derrière in particular and I’m trying very hard to hold it altogether as I approach the age of 62. We Leo babies born in August are all about appearances, but must admit I’ve let mine slip over the last several years.

Wedding Anniversary June 23, 2011

Losing about 35 pounds last year  has helped immeasurably and so has following the Phase 1 & 2 diet of Doug Kauffman’s Know the Cause . It’s also helped with the asthma symptoms not being so bad, and helped my digestion and gut function better and many other things.

Well, enough for now, I promise to keep smilin’ and will keep you posted and share more Terms of Endearment from Mr. Wicker Woman soon…
