Gathering oats, barley and cattail leaves

September 12th, 2009 · Comments Off · What's New

You know that old adage, “Make hay while the sun shines?” well that’s what I’ve been doing for about the last week and a half, well, sort of anyway. Oat straw gathered for bee skeps.

I’ve been gathering and drying oat and barley straw for bee skeps and cattail leaves for rush seatweaving for next year’s classes.

Barley straw gathered and loaded in the car.

The temperatures have been great, except for a couple days of rain, so the gathering has been all consuming for me. Have to gather all the barley and oats that I can before the farmer cuts it all down and uses the combine on it. Been taking off the seed heads and drying them all in the sun.

And the cattails need to be gathered now just after the tips have turned brown, but before any frost sets in that destroys it. After they are dried, they can be stored for months until needed for hand-twisted rush chair seats.

See the Articles tab on the left sidebar for more information about gathering and processing cattail leaves.

Beautiful September Sunset

September 12th, 2009 · Comments Off · Weavin' Wicker Woman Blog

Early evening last night after it cooled down a bit, I decided to get the lawn mowing done. We have a gas powered push lawnmower and a big yard. So when the mower died after the first tank of gas was gone, I decided to call it quits and went inside to eat and also watch one of my favorite shows, “Ghost Whisperer.”

As I entered the trailer and looked out the West window, I saw a beautiful pink sky sunset. But by the time I ran out to the studio again to get the camera, and run down to the end of the driveway to get closer, it had changed and wasn’t quite as beautiful as it was just a few minutes before.

But here’s what I shot, it’s it interesting that in the left corner the clouds seem to follow the tree top line? So happy to capture this …

Harvesting Straw for Bee Skeps

I’ve been having a great time the last week or so, harvesting and processing oat and barley straw for weaving bee skeps (bee hives).

Luckily I have gathered quite a bit for this season, as the farmer is about ready to cut and combine all the grain.

Cane Chairs to Mend–New page

September 11th, 2009 · Comments Off · What's New

Chair caning man from the 1800sRemember this wonderful picture of a chair caning professional in the 1800s?

A new page has recently been added to the site, listed under the Articles tab called, “Chairs to Mend,” that you might find interesting.

On the new page is a children’s nursery rhyme about chair mending and an article on the chair caning professionals for you to enjoy.

“Chairs to Mend” is a magazine article written in the 1800s by Alexander Wainwright. It’s about the professional chair caning menders and the marketing techniques they used to get work back then!
