“Sugar on Snow” great success!

Bee skep making demonstration by Cathryn Peters

Well, the "Sugar on Snow" celebration in Beaver Bay, MN this weekend was a great success! Weather was perfect for the two-man saw contest, tug-o-war, eating the "sugar on snow" maple rock candy and watching the blacksmith work outside.

Here I am demonstrating how to weave a bee skep using oat straw, with the help of a very young aspiring basketmaker!

Inside we had candle making, broom making, soap making, carpenter, printer, dressmaker, cider press, grinding mill, carpenter, seat weaver, hat maker, bee skep weaving demonstration and many more taking place.  Jot the fourth weekend in February down on your calendars for next year’s celebration in Beaver Bay, Minnesota!

Feb. 22 & 23, 2008 “Sugar in Snow” Winter Festival–
Beaver Bay, Minnesota

Get on your winter gear and trudge up to the Community Center in Beaver Bay, Minnesota along the North Shore of Lake Superior for the 5th Annual "Sugar on Snow" Colonial Williamsburg Winter Festival from 12noon-8pm on Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturday.

The event name is taken from the New England tradition method of making maple syrup. The sap is heated and poured on snow outdoors, which forms in to pure hard maple candy treats. Then everyone has a party to celebrate a job well done!

All demonstrations and events are recreated from the 1700s with a Colonial Kitchen and
General Store–
featuring candle making, soap making, apple cider pressing, corn husk doll demo,
sauerkraut making, spinning, weaving, woodworker, chair caning, basketmaker, bee skep making, potter and hide tanning. Angora, MN craftsperson, Cathryn Peters will be demonstrating the chair caning, basketmaking and bee skep making both Saturday and Sunday.

Outdoor activities include: maple syrup making demonstration, dog sledding, tug-of-war, blacksmith,
2-man saw contest, and miller grinding grain. C
ome join the fun in a recreation of a traditional New England Winter Festival!

Tweaking-Articles, Tip Sheets, Reports Page

Yesterday we worked a bit more on the website, in the Articles, Tip Sheets and Reports area, making it a bit more ‘user friendly". Now you can read and article and go on to the next or go back to the main article listing page. Still working on posting some of the pictures, but check it out!

WickerWoman.com New Site Redesign Launched!

Well, as you can see we launched the new WickerWoman.com site redesign and officially went "live" on Monday, February 11, 2008! It was a little premature and ahead of schedule and there are still some bugs to work out and link coding errors to fix, but basically it’s a go! This page is where you will find all changes and updates to the site, and where you should check first for notices of this type.

We’ve added many new pages of context with new how-to articles, and methods of advertising on the site, new support donation buttons, and contact-us page. Still have the useful Resource Links, Events Calendar, Cane and Basket Supplies page and others that were so popular on the old site, like the Wicker FAQ, Seatweaving and Wicker Repair. We’ve redesigned the navigation links and made the whole site more "user-friendly, too."

So please look through all the navigation links to the left on each page, or use the top navigation on some of the pages like: Cane and Basket Supplies; Furniture Repair Directory; Publications; Basket Info Sites to get around. Enjoy!
